Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort’s Coaches and Athletes Finished at the Top of the Laguna Phuket Marathon 2017

PHUKET, THAILAND – Coaches and athletes from Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort are top finishers at the 12th edition of the Laguna Phuket Marathon.  The event was held over two days, 3rd and 4th June 2017.  The 2 km, 5 km and 10.5 km races took place on the Saturday afternoon (3rd June) while the 21 km Half Marathon and the 42 km Marathon took place Sunday morning (4th June).  Over 7,000 runners competed in the race.  More than 3,000 runners competed in Saturday’s 5 km and 10 km “sunset” distances.  Almost 300 children ran in the 2 km Kids’ Run.  Almost 4,000 runners joined the Half Marathon and Marathon races.  Athletes and coaches from Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort were top finishers in overall and age categories:

  • Elle Brookes: 1st place overall finisher in the 21 km Half Marathon (01:38:38.4)
  • David Escolar Ballesteros: 2nd place overall finisher in the 42 km Marathon (03:05:16.6)
  • Ekkarat “Ricky” Phanthip: 3rd place finisher in his age category (M 30-39) in the 10.5 km run (00:39:22.8)
  • Marcela Soto: 2nd place finisher in her age category (F 30-39) in the 10.5 km run (00:50:54.6)

“What an amazing event! We started the run before sunset.  We ran with fellow competitors in the dark.  The first 12 km, I felt so comfortable but had to push the last 9 km. So many smiling faces and happy people at this event! I had a great race and I have to say a big thank you to my Coach, Ricky Phanthip, plus my friends and family who are always there to support!” said Elle Brookes, a member of Thanyapura Pro Triathlon Team.

“I’m pretty happy with my result because it was my first marathon and I knew it is not the distance I am used to racing.  Very hard race!  I feel pain all over my body, but it’s worth it,” said David Escolar Ballesteros, Swimming and Cycling Coach.

“It was very hot.  I’m happy to see new runners getting faster and better times.  It’s nice to see the running community grow larger.  Sports change people and they owe it to their health,” said Ekkarat “Ricky” Phanthip, Head Coach of Triathlon.

“Great race in our backyard, the course was nice and mostly flat, and the heat was intense. Running in the sunset in the road next to Layan Beach was the best part,” said Marcela Soto, Nutritionist and Muay Thai Champion.
