Hello, my name is Chloe Kay and I’m an an everyday Australian age group triathlete, living the dream and loving every minute of it. My time in the sport is relatively short and two years ago I never would have imagined I would be where I am now, exercise was a chore not a hobby. I began triathlon as I was looking for something more in life, it took a while but I reckon it’s given me that and so much else.
Growing up I was involved in ballet and swimming, however I was never really a keen athlete. Just like any other Aussie kid I lived in the pool all Summer, competing with my brothers to see who could hold their breath underwater for the longest. I absolutely loved swimming and being in the water, but playing mermaids was more my thing than racing. I learnt to ride a bike (without trainer wheels) quite late in my childhood and never enjoyed running.
Fast forward 10 years consisting of very little sport at high school and dabbling in club waterpolo during Uni, I found myself graduated as a pharmacist and out in the workplace. Somewhat overweight, drinking and partying hard quite regularly I was not stimulated by the perils of eat, sleep, work, repeat and I decided there had to be more to life. An advertisement for the Bali International Triathlon caught my eye and I thought maybe tri could be the thing I was looking for. In hindsight that was when the love affair with triathlon and travel began, but not immediately.
The road never was straightforward or easy, I learnt that you have to be both consistent and patient with training to see results. With absolutely no base fitness it was very hard at first, I gave up a couple of times before my triathlon story really even started. What may seem like a small triumph now, was actually huge at the time. I remember running 2km non stop for the first time and was immensely proud. After a couple of months training, in May 2013 I got plantar fasciitis from running, I could barely stand up at work and decided it wasn’t worth it, triathlon clearly wasn’t for me.
In September 2013 I moved from Darwin (Northern Territory) to Noosa (Queensland) home of the world famous Noosa Tri. Three months of living the eat, sleep, work, repeat lifestyle again I realised it had to stop. I had put on even more weight, had made very few friends since moving and really wasn’t making the most of living in such a beautiful place. I started going to the local pool to swim laps which is where I came across The Noosa Tri Club. I nervously and reluctantly joined their swim squads and began to get back into it. On the first week of January in 2014 I started on a training program with my coach Jess, the goal was to get fit and do the Mooloolaba Triathlon, my first attempt at Olympic Distance. The last two years from then has been a whirlwind of triathlon adventures, my life has changed completely. As cliche as it may sound, now triathlon isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle.
Persistence, determination and a little bit of crazy saw me finish 2 Olympic distance triathlons, a 70.3 (half Ironman) and my first Ironman in 2014. I got a taste for the longer course tri’s and in 2015 finished two more Ironman races, including a podium finish at Ironman Malaysia in November. I also repeated three of the other races from the previous year and saw huge improvements on my times. The path I took wasn’t really conventional, going into long course races so quickly isn’t usually advised, but I have a great coach and strong support network and enjoy the challenge of long distance training as much as the racing.
My favourite part of racing is travelling to a new destination and enjoying the atmosphere in the lead up to the race. There’s something special about being in a foreign place with thousands of other people doing what you love. So I am fortunate and grateful for the opportunity be spending a bit of time training and racing in Asia this year, as well as taking on Ironman Cairns in June.
I am just your average age group athlete, I work full time, train part time and race when I can. I’m quite goal orientated and will do everything in my power to achieve what I set my heart to, but the other part of me is human… I have good days and average ones but overall seriously love triathlons. This year expect to read some articles from me on the highs and lows of training and traveling, lots of hard yakka goes on behind the scenes, the smiles and finish line photos are just the icing on the cake. When I’m not swimming, riding or running around Noosa you’ll find me working as a pharmacist, so I will also be sharing some of my knowledge on health and general well being.
